| | Originally a small fishing and boat building town, Paynesville is now a vibrant tourism destination and home for many people who work in Bairnsdale. The creation of a canal system about ten years ago contributed to the change, adding a dimension of sophistication mirrored in the style of architecture that has replaced the simple fishermen's cottages.
The supermarkets, butchers, bakers, green grocer and fish monger all sell very good produce. You can easily make up the ingredients for an anti pasto, a gourmet barbecue, or a great paella.
There are a number of excellent cafes, including Pier 70 which is right on the jetty, The Fig Licensed Cafe, SARDINE Eatery & Bar, the hotel does good counter meals, and there is a selection of takeaways. The fish shop, in addition to fresh fish, cooks piping hot and very tasty fish and chips.
There are some specialty shops, and a chemist.
Heading north along McMillan's Straits you'll find water and sewage pumpout facilities. And just inland from the Paynesville township is the Bairnsdale Golf Course. | | |
